Washington, D.C.: The search for Antoinette Forbes, a 53-year-old Washington, D.C., mother who has been missing since September 4, continues as newly surfaced court records shed light on a violent domestic-abuse case involving her former partner, Russell Ashford.
Ashford, 65, was recently arrested in Pennsylvania following an alleged probation violation connected to a July incident involving the couple's 10-year-old son. He is also facing separate gun-possession charges in Pennsylvania. However, authorities have repeatedly stressed that Ashford has not been named as a suspect in Forbes' disappearance.
Forbes' disappearance remains under investigation
Forbes was last seen at about 3 p.m. on September 4 in the 3200 block of Nebraska Avenue NW near Foxhall Road, according to D.C. police.
She was reported missing on September 6 after friends went to check on her home. Her car, keys, wallet, phones and dog were reportedly left behind, while there was no sign of Forbes. Her family has described the disappearance as completely out of character.
Her family and friends have continued urging residents in the surrounding Northwest D.C. neighbourhoods to check doorbell and security-camera footage from the period around her disappearance.
D.C. police have said the investigation remains ongoing and have not publicly identified a suspect.
What court records reveal about the 2021 assault
Court documents from Maryland detail a serious assault involving Forbes and Ashford in 2021.
According to prosecutors and police records, an argument concerning their son's schooling escalated into violence. Ashford was accused of throwing Forbes against a staircase, repeatedly punching her and striking her head against the floor until she lost consciousness. A neighbour reportedly intervened after hearing Forbes screaming.
Forbes was taken to hospital following the incident. Court records cited by NBC Washington say she suffered facial fractures, facial lacerations, eye damage, a concussion, a broken finger and other injuries. Prosecutors later said some of the injuries were permanent.
Ashford pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in the 2021 case. He was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison, with most of the sentence suspended, and served about nine months before being placed on probation.
Forbes had spoken about her fear of Ashford
In a July 2026 court hearing, shortly before her disappearance, Forbes spoke about the lasting impact of the assault.
According to courtroom audio reported by NBC Washington, she described permanent problems involving her eye, jaw and finger and said she had previously felt intimidated and afraid because of Ashford's physical presence.
The hearing concerned Ashford's request for probation before judgment, a legal change that prosecutors opposed. The judge ultimately granted the request, effectively removing the earlier conviction from his record while leaving him subject to probation conditions, according to reports. Forbes had opposed the request.
Why was Ashford arrested?
Authorities say Ashford was arrested in Pennsylvania after an alleged violation of his probation.
A separate July incident involved the couple's son. Court records indicate Ashford allegedly went to the child's summer camp without being listed as an approved person for pickup and became confrontational with a staff member.
Authorities subsequently alleged that he violated a probation condition concerning hostile contact with his son. Pennsylvania police later located and arrested him during a traffic stop after an out-of-state warrant was discovered.
Ashford was also charged in Pennsylvania after investigators reportedly found multiple firearms at a woman's home. Those gun allegations are separate from the investigation into Forbes' disappearance.
Family says abuse was kept from them
Forbes' sister, Aileen Forbes, said the family was unaware of the extent of the 2021 abuse until details emerged after Ashford's recent arrest.
She told Fox News Digital that Antoinette had not told the family about the assault and suggested that her sister may have kept the abuse private because she wanted to protect those close to her.
Friends have also described Forbes as deeply devoted to her son and said they do not believe she would voluntarily leave her life without explanation.
Search for Antoinette Forbes continues
Despite the new revelations about Forbes' past relationship, investigators have not publicly linked Ashford to her disappearance.
The focus remains on locating Forbes, who has not been seen since September 4. Her family is asking people in Northwest D.C. and surrounding areas to review security-camera footage that could help establish her movements around the time she disappeared.
Anyone with information about Forbes' whereabouts is being urged to contact the Metropolitan Police Department.
The case remains active, and the circumstances surrounding Forbes' disappearance have not been publicly established.
