The debate over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India debut intensified after former cricketer Ajay Jadeja publicly asked chief selector Ajit Agarkar when the teenage sensation would be picked for the national side. ‘When Will You Pick Him?’: Pressure Builds on Selectors Over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
The clamour for teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to wear the India jersey is growing louder with every passing day.
After a sensational IPL 2026 campaign that saw him dominate some of the world's best bowlers, the 15-year-old has become the centre of a national selection debate. That conversation reached a new level on Sunday when former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja revealed that he had directly confronted selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar about the youngster's future.
The exchange took place on the sidelines of the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad, where cricket administrators, former players and national selectors gathered to witness the tournament's climax.
Jadeja's question was simple.
"Mr. Chairman, when will you pick Vaibhav Sooryavanshi? If not now, then when?" he reportedly asked Agarkar.
The remark has quickly gone viral among cricket fans, many of whom believe Sooryavanshi has already done enough to merit an India call-up.
A Season That Changed Everything
Sooryavanshi's rise has been nothing short of extraordinary.
The Rajasthan Royals opener finished IPL 2026 with a staggering 776 runs, becoming the youngest player ever to win the tournament's Orange Cap. His fearless strokeplay, remarkable consistency and ability to dominate both pace and spin turned him into one of the biggest attractions of the season.
Several of his innings came under pressure, including a breathtaking 96 in the playoffs that nearly carried Rajasthan Royals into the final. His strike rate remained among the highest in the competition, while his six-hitting ability drew comparisons with some of the modern game's biggest stars.
What has impressed observers even more is his maturity.
Despite being only 15, Sooryavanshi has shown composure that many seasoned professionals struggle to maintain.
BCCI's Strongest Signal Yet
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India had previously remained cautious regarding the youngster's progression, recent comments from BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia appear to suggest that the board is actively planning his development pathway.
Speaking after the IPL final, Saikia described Sooryavanshi as a player with a bright future and assured that the board would support his growth to the highest level of the game.
"Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a wonderful player coming up and he has a bright future. BCCI will do everything to get him to the highest level of cricket," Saikia said.
While the statement stopped short of confirming an India call-up, many observers interpreted it as the clearest indication yet that selectors view the teenager as part of India's long-term plans.
Why Selectors Are Proceeding Carefully
The excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi is undeniable, but Indian cricket's decision-makers are aware of the risks associated with rushing young talents.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had earlier acknowledged the teenager's exceptional performances but pointed out that several established players remain ahead in the selection queue. The strategy, according to the selection panel, is to expose Sooryavanshi gradually to higher levels of competition.
That process has already begun.
The youngster has been named in the India A squad for the upcoming tri-nation 50-over series in Sri Lanka, a move widely seen as the next step before senior international cricket.
India A tours have historically served as launching pads for future stars, giving selectors a chance to evaluate players in challenging overseas conditions without the intense scrutiny of senior international cricket.
Cricket Greats Back the Teenager
Support for Sooryavanshi is not limited to fans.
Several current and former cricketers have openly backed his elevation to the national setup.
Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who has worked closely with the youngster in the IPL, recently declared that Sooryavanshi is "more than ready" for bigger challenges and predicted that an India call-up could arrive sooner rather than later.
Other cricket legends have also praised his talent, arguing that exceptional performers should not be judged solely by age.
The teenager's exploits in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year further strengthened his credentials. He played a leading role in India's triumph and was widely regarded as one of the tournament's standout performers.
Not Everyone Wants a Fast Track
Despite the growing excitement, there are voices urging patience.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra recently cautioned against rushing Sooryavanshi into the senior side, arguing that long-term development should take precedence over short-term hype.
Many cricket analysts point to previous examples where young players struggled under the weight of expectations after being promoted too quickly.
The challenge for Indian cricket is finding the right balance.
On one hand, Sooryavanshi's performances suggest he is ready for tougher competition. On the other, India possess one of the deepest talent pools in world cricket, making selection decisions more complicated than simply rewarding IPL form.
What This Means for Indian Cricket
The emergence of Sooryavanshi arrives at an important time.
Indian cricket is gradually preparing for a generational transition, with selectors constantly looking for players capable of becoming the next face of the national team.
The teenager's aggressive approach, fearless mentality and ability to handle pressure have convinced many that he belongs in that conversation.
For fans, the debate is no longer whether Sooryavanshi will play for India.
The question is when.
Jadeja's public challenge to Agarkar has merely amplified a discussion that was already dominating cricket circles.
What Happens Next?
The immediate focus will be on Sooryavanshi's performances for India A in Sri Lanka.
Strong displays there could accelerate his path towards the senior side, especially with India scheduled to play multiple white-ball series over the coming months.
For now, the BCCI remains cautious in its messaging.
Yet the tone has clearly shifted.
After months of silence, senior board officials are now openly speaking about the youngster's future. Combined with endorsements from former players and coaches, it suggests that Indian cricket's newest sensation is moving steadily closer to the biggest stage.
Whether that moment arrives this year or next, one thing appears increasingly certain: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is no longer viewed as merely a promising youngster. He is being discussed as a future India cricketer.
And that, perhaps, is the strongest hint of all.
