BJP Targets Congress Over Election Commission Protest
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress over its protest against the Election Commission of India. The BJP described the protest as “drama” and criticised Congress leaders as well as leaders from non-NDA parties who participated in the demonstration.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the principal Opposition party and its leaders of abusing the Election Commission after failing to secure the mandate of the people.
Rijiju's remarks focused on the BJP's argument that political parties should seek public support through their work and service rather than repeatedly challenging democratic institutions.
Kiren Rijiju Targets Rahul Gandhi
Rijiju specifically addressed Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and urged him to learn from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP workers.
According to Rijiju, the BJP's approach to politics is based on continued work and service among the people. He said Rahul Gandhi and his colleagues should focus on serving the public rather than engaging in what he described as daily “drama” against the Election Commission and the Supreme Court.
Rijiju said that in a democracy, political parties can secure the people's mandate by serving them.
He also pointed to BJP workers as an example, saying that they continue to serve people without doing so for their own interests.
BJP Says Public Support Comes Through Work
The central argument in Rijiju's criticism was that political parties should earn public support through their work.
He said Rahul Gandhi should learn from Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as BJP workers, whom he described as continuing to serve people selflessly.
Rijiju argued that a party seeking electoral support must connect with the people through service and work.
His remarks came amid the Congress-led protest against the Election Commission, which the BJP has criticised as an attempt to target the poll body.
Criticism of Opposition Parties
The BJP also criticised leaders of non-NDA parties who joined the Congress protest.
According to the BJP, the Opposition's criticism of the Election Commission followed its failure to secure the mandate of the people.
The party described the protest as part of a broader pattern of criticism directed at constitutional and democratic institutions.
Rijiju said that Rahul Gandhi and his colleagues had been raising such issues against the Election Commission and the Supreme Court since 2014.
He argued that instead of repeatedly targeting these institutions, political leaders should focus on serving citizens and winning their confidence.
Rijiju's Message to Rahul Gandhi
Rijiju's direct message to Rahul Gandhi was to learn from Modi and BJP workers and focus on public service.
He said BJP workers continued to serve people not for their own benefit but in a selfless manner.
According to the Union Minister, such service is the route to securing people's support in a democracy.
His comments reflect the BJP's response to the Congress protest and its criticism of the Election Commission.
The political exchange has once again highlighted the continuing confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Congress over the functioning of democratic institutions and electoral issues.
For the BJP, Rijiju's remarks were aimed at arguing that opposition parties should concentrate on their work among voters rather than relying on protests and allegations.
For the Congress and its participating allies, the protest has become part of their political opposition to the Election Commission. However, the BJP has strongly rejected the approach and accused the Opposition of attempting to undermine the Commission after failing to obtain the people's mandate.
The remarks by Kiren Rijiju therefore add another layer to the ongoing political dispute, with the BJP urging Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders to focus on public service and electoral support rather than what it called “daily drama”.
