Mutual Funds Increase Buying in Select Midcap Stocks

Mutual funds increased their exposure to several midcap stocks during August 2026, with Cochin Shipyard, Paytm and three other companies emerging as the top five stocks with the highest net buying.

According to a report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services cited by ET, the five stocks were Cochin Shipyard, Patanjali Foods, ICICI Prudential AMC, Billionbrains Garage Ventures and One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm.

The data reflects the change in the value of mutual fund holdings during August and the month-on-month change in that value.

The figures are based on the August 2026 analysis cited by ET from Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

Cochin Shipyard Sees Strong Mutual Fund Buying

Cochin Shipyard witnessed significant mutual fund buying in August and featured among the five midcap stocks with the highest net buying.

The value change in mutual fund holdings was Rs 37.3 billion, while the month-on-month change stood at 29.4%. The stock accounted for 0.2% of the midcap value considered in the analysis.

The increased interest comes as the company remains part of India's broader shipbuilding and defence-related investment theme. Earlier in August, HDFC Defence Fund added Cochin Shipyard to its portfolio and also increased exposure to other defence stocks.

Patanjali Foods Also Attracts Mutual Fund Interest

Patanjali Foods was another major midcap stock that saw increased mutual fund buying during August.

The value change in mutual fund holdings stood at Rs 24.2 billion, while the month-on-month increase was 27.6%. The stock represented 0.1% of the midcap value in the analysis.

The company's presence among the stocks with the highest buying indicates continued institutional interest in the consumer and food-products segment.

ICICI Prudential AMC Records 16.8% Monthly Increase

ICICI Prudential AMC also featured among the top five midcap stocks.

The value change in August was Rs 14.9 billion, representing a 16.8% month-on-month increase. The company accounted for 0.8% of the midcap value considered in the report.

Asset management companies can attract investor interest when expectations for long-term growth in India's mutual fund and investment industry remain positive.

Billionbrains Garage Ventures Makes the List

Billionbrains Garage Ventures, the parent company of online broking platform Groww, was another stock that attracted mutual fund buying in August.

The value change stood at Rs 12.6 billion, while the month-on-month increase was 14%. The company represented 1.2% of the midcap value in the analysis.

Groww's parent company has increasingly appeared in mutual fund portfolio disclosures following its listing and has drawn attention from fund managers looking for opportunities in India's growing financial-services and digital-investment ecosystem.

Paytm Records the Largest Value Change

One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, recorded the largest value change among the five stocks listed in the report.

The value change in August was Rs 45.5 billion, while the month-on-month increase stood at 13.8%. Paytm accounted for 2.2% of the midcap value considered in the analysis.

The increase highlights continued institutional interest in Paytm despite the stock's volatile history and significant changes in its business and regulatory environment.

Why Are Mutual Funds Buying These Midcap Stocks?

The five stocks belong to different industries, including defence and shipbuilding, consumer products, asset management, digital financial services and fintech.

This diversity suggests that mutual fund managers were not necessarily following a single sectoral theme while increasing exposure to these stocks. Instead, individual company fundamentals, valuations, earnings expectations and long-term growth prospects may influence portfolio decisions.

Mutual fund managers regularly adjust their holdings based on changing market conditions and their investment strategies. For example, previous portfolio disclosures have shown fund houses adding Cochin Shipyard and increasing exposure to other defence-related stocks.

What Does Mutual Fund Buying Mean for Investors?

Heavy mutual fund buying can indicate increased institutional interest in a stock, but it should not automatically be interpreted as a buy signal for retail investors.

Fund managers may buy a stock for different reasons, including valuation opportunities, expected earnings growth, portfolio rebalancing or changes in their sector allocation.

Moreover, mutual fund holdings can change quickly. A stock that attracts substantial buying in one month may see profit-taking or reduced exposure in a subsequent month.

Investors Should Look Beyond Buying Data

Investors should consider several factors before investing in any of these stocks.

These include revenue and profit growth, debt levels, valuation, cash flows, competitive position, industry outlook and future earnings expectations. Investors should also consider whether the stock fits their risk tolerance and overall portfolio allocation.

The fact that mutual funds bought a stock in August does not guarantee that the stock will generate positive returns in the future.

Midcap Stocks Can Carry Higher Volatility

Midcap stocks can offer attractive long-term growth opportunities, but they can also experience larger price swings than established large-cap companies.

Investors should therefore be prepared for periods of significant volatility. This becomes particularly important when stocks have already experienced strong price appreciation or when institutional buying creates heightened market expectations.

A diversified portfolio and a long-term investment approach can help investors manage some of these risks, although diversification cannot eliminate market risk.

Bottom Line

Cochin Shipyard, Patanjali Foods, ICICI Prudential AMC, Billionbrains Garage Ventures and One97 Communications (Paytm) emerged as the top five midcap stocks with the highest mutual fund buying in August 2026, according to the Motilal Oswal Financial Services data cited by ET.

Paytm recorded the largest value change at Rs 45.5 billion, while Cochin Shipyard saw a 29.4% month-on-month increase in mutual fund holding value. Patanjali Foods followed with a 27.6% increase, while ICICI Prudential AMC, Billionbrains Garage Ventures and Paytm also recorded positive changes.

The data provides an insight into where mutual fund managers were increasing exposure, but investors should not use institutional buying alone as a reason to purchase a stock. Company fundamentals, valuations, risk and investment objectives remain important when making investment decisions.
