Why Is the Jewellery Price Different From the IBJA Rate?
Gold buyers may notice that the 22K price quoted by a jewellery brand is different from the IBJA 22K indicative rate.
This is because IBJA rates and retail jewellery prices serve different purposes.
IBJA publishes indicative bullion rates based on gold purity and market prices. Jewellery retailers, meanwhile, quote prices for gold used in jewellery and may incorporate their own pricing structure.
The final amount paid by a customer can additionally include:
Making charges
GST
Wastage charges, where applicable
Stone or gemstone costs
Design-related charges
Other applicable retailer charges
Therefore, buyers should not compare only the headline gold rate when calculating the final cost of jewellery.
Why Do Gold Rates Differ Between Jewellery Brands?
Even when two jewellery companies sell the same purity of gold, their quoted rates may differ.
For September 19, Tanishq's reported 22K rate was ₹14,330 per gram, while Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers were each at ₹14,285 per gram.
The difference was ₹45 per gram between Tanishq and the other three brands.
Retailers may have different pricing policies, operating costs, promotional structures and other components affecting their quoted jewellery rates.

What Is the Difference Between 24K and 22K Gold?
24K gold has the highest purity among commonly traded gold categories, with 999 fineness representing approximately 99.9% gold.
22K gold contains a smaller proportion of gold and is commonly used for jewellery because the addition of other metals provides greater strength and durability.
This is why jewellery buyers often compare 22K prices rather than looking only at the 24K bullion price.
Similarly, 20K, 18K and 14K gold contain progressively lower gold content and a higher proportion of other metals.
18K Gold: What Does the IBJA Rate Mean?
The IBJA's latest reported 18K rate was ₹12,452 per gram.
18K gold is approximately 75% gold by fineness, with the remaining portion consisting of other metals.
It is commonly used for certain jewellery designs, particularly pieces where greater hardness and different colour combinations are desired.
However, the final retail price of an 18K jewellery item can be substantially different from the IBJA indicative rate because of making charges, GST and other costs.
Is the Gold Rate the Same as the Final Jewellery Price?
No.
The quoted gold rate is only one component of the final jewellery bill.
For example, if a customer buys a 22K gold ornament weighing 10 grams, the calculation cannot simply be made by multiplying the 22K rate by 10 and treating that figure as the final payable amount.
The bill may also contain:
Gold value + making charges + applicable GST + other applicable charges
The exact calculation depends on the jeweller, product and applicable taxes.
What Should Gold Buyers Check Before Purchasing?
Consumers planning to buy gold jewellery should compare more than the headline gold rate.
Important factors include:
1. Gold Purity
Check whether the jewellery is 22K, 18K, 20K or another purity.
2. Per-Gram Gold Rate
Ask for the day's applicable rate for the exact purity of the jewellery.
3. Making Charges
Making charges can significantly affect the final bill, particularly for intricate designs.
4. GST
Check the applicable GST component separately.
5. Hallmarking
Buyers should check the applicable hallmark and purity markings on the jewellery.
6. Buyback Policy
If resale or exchange is important, understand the jeweller's buyback or exchange terms before purchasing.
7. Weight of Stones
For jewellery containing diamonds or gemstones, ask how much of the total weight is attributable to gold and how much to stones.
Why Comparing Jewellery Brands Matters
The September 19 rates demonstrate why consumers may want to compare prices before buying.
Tanishq's reported 22K rate was ₹45 per gram higher than the rates quoted by Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers.
On a 10-gram purchase, that difference alone amounts to ₹450 before considering other components of the bill.
However, the lowest quoted gold rate does not necessarily translate into the lowest final bill because making charges, wastage, design charges, stone costs and other terms can differ.
Therefore, consumers should compare the complete invoice, rather than only the per-gram gold price.
Gold Investment vs Gold Jewellery
Gold jewellery and gold as an investment are not exactly the same.
When purchasing jewellery, the customer pays for the gold as well as the craftsmanship and other applicable costs.
Investment products such as gold ETFs, certain gold funds or other regulated gold-linked instruments may have different cost structures and risks.
Therefore, consumers should distinguish between buying gold for personal use and buying an investment product intended to track gold prices.
Gold and Silver Rate Today: Key Numbers

IBJA 22K: ₹15,004/g
IBJA 20K: ₹13,682/g
IBJA 18K: ₹12,452/g
IBJA 14K: ₹9,915/g
IBJA 999 silver: ₹2,36,908/kg
Bottom Line
Gold prices moved higher at major jewellery retailers on September 19, 2026. Tanishq's 22K gold jewellery rate was ₹14,330 per gram, while Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers quoted ₹14,285 per gram in the cities covered by the report.
The latest IBJA rates reported were ₹15,373 per gram for 999-purity gold and ₹2,36,908 per kg for 999-purity silver, along with separate rates for 22K, 20K, 18K and 14K gold.
Gold buyers should remember that these rates are not necessarily the final jewellery cost. GST, making charges and other applicable costs can increase the amount payable.
For anyone planning to buy jewellery, comparing the gold rate, making charges, purity, hallmarking, stone weight and final invoice across multiple jewellers can provide a clearer picture of the actual purchase cost.
