Gujarat hit-and-run case turns into alleged honour killing
A suspected hit-and-run case in Gujarat's Ahmedabad has taken a shocking turn after police allegedly uncovered a murder conspiracy involving the victim's own family.
The victim, identified as 22-year-old Sofia, worked as a hospital receptionist. According to the police investigation reported by NDTV and The Indian Express, her death was initially presented as the result of a road accident. Investigators later found evidence suggesting that the accident had been staged.
Woman allegedly attacked with hammer
The incident took place on the night of August 12. Police said Sofia was travelling with her father, Mohmand Farooq, and her 38-year-old brother, Mohmand Habil.
According to the investigation, the brother allegedly diverted the motorcycle to a secluded dirt track near Gheljipura village. Police allege that he then struck Sofia on the head with a hammer three times.
The family members allegedly moved her back towards the main road and damaged the motorcycle to make the incident appear to be a collision involving another vehicle.
Sofia was subsequently taken to Sola Civil Hospital, where she died from her injuries the following day, according to the reports.
Brother allegedly reported a fake road accident
After the incident, Habil allegedly approached authorities and claimed that a speeding vehicle had struck the motorcycle from behind near the Gheljipura intersection.
He reportedly told police that Sofia had suffered serious head injuries in the collision and that he himself had sustained bruises.
However, investigators reportedly found inconsistencies in the accident narrative, eventually shifting the focus of the investigation from a hit-and-run to a possible murder. The Indian Express also reported that police were treating the case as an alleged honour killing.
‘Video with man’ allegedly triggered family anger
Police reportedly believe the alleged motive was connected to a video involving Sofia and a man that had circulated online around three months before the killing.
Investigators said the family allegedly feared social humiliation after the video went viral. Police suspect that the father and brother subsequently planned the killing and attempted to conceal it as a road accident.
The case has therefore raised fresh concerns over honour-based violence, in which family members justify violence against women over perceived threats to family reputation or social standing.
Father and brother in custody
The father and brother have been taken into custody and face murder allegations, according to the latest reports.
The investigation is continuing, including efforts to establish the full sequence of events and whether anyone else was involved in the alleged conspiracy. The allegations remain subject to the criminal investigation and judicial process.
The case highlights how an apparent road accident can conceal a far more serious crime — and how notions of “family honour” can have devastating consequences for women.
