How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username: A Step-by-Step Guide

WhatsApp is gradually rolling out one of its most anticipated privacy features—usernames. The new functionality enables users to communicate by sharing a unique username instead of revealing their phone number, offering greater privacy and a more streamlined way to connect.

While the feature is being released in phases and may not yet be available to all users, those with access can already reserve their preferred usernames. Here's a step-by-step guide to claiming yours before someone else does.

What Is the WhatsApp Username Feature?

Traditionally, WhatsApp accounts have been tied exclusively to mobile phone numbers. With the introduction of usernames, users can create a unique identity that others can search for and message, similar to platforms like Telegram, Signal and Instagram.

The feature is aimed at improving privacy, particularly when interacting with people outside your contact list, such as community members, businesses or new acquaintances.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username

Follow these steps if the feature is available on your account:

  1. Update WhatsApp

    • Make sure you're using the latest version of WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

  2. Open WhatsApp Settings

    • Launch WhatsApp and tap Settings.

    • On Android, tap the three-dot menu and select Settings.

    • On iPhone, tap the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Tap Your Profile

    • Select your profile section, where your name and profile photo are displayed.

  4. Choose 'Username'

    • If your account is eligible, you'll see a new Username option beneath your phone number.

  5. Enter Your Preferred Username

    • Type your desired username.

    • WhatsApp will instantly check its availability.

  6. Confirm Your Username

    • If the username meets WhatsApp's rules and is available, confirm it to reserve it.

Once confirmed, your username becomes associated with your account.

Username Rules

WhatsApp has introduced several guidelines for usernames to prevent impersonation and abuse. Generally, usernames:

  • Must be unique.

  • Cannot begin with "www."

  • Must contain at least one letter.

  • May include lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

  • Cannot end with a domain extension such as ".com" or ".net."

  • Cannot include spaces or most special characters.

If your preferred username is unavailable, WhatsApp will suggest similar alternatives.

Why Usernames Matter

The feature represents a significant privacy upgrade.

Instead of sharing your personal phone number, you'll be able to provide your username when chatting with people you've just met, joining communities or interacting in public groups.

Your contacts who already have your phone number saved will still be able to message you normally.

Who Can Access It?

The username feature is being rolled out gradually through server-side updates. Even if you've installed the latest version of WhatsApp, the option may not appear immediately.

Users enrolled in WhatsApp Beta are expected to receive access before the wider public rollout, though Meta has not announced a universal release date.

Tips for Choosing a Username

Since usernames are unique, it is advisable to reserve one early if the feature is available. Consider:

  • Using your real name or brand name for easier recognition.

  • Keeping the username short and memorable.

  • Avoiding unnecessary numbers or symbols.

  • Choosing a consistent username across multiple social platforms if possible.

As WhatsApp expands the rollout globally, usernames are expected to become one of the platform's most important identity features, giving users more control over their privacy while making it easier to connect without exposing personal contact details.
