Indian Railways Identifies 11 Trains With Journeys Over 40 Hours for Special Cleanliness Monitoring

Indian Railways has identified 11 long-distance trains with journey durations of more than 40 hours for enhanced cleanliness monitoring, in a move aimed at improving passenger experience on some of the country's longest train journeys.

The initiative will focus on maintaining cleanliness and serviceability throughout the journey rather than concentrating only on conditions at the train's originating station. According to a Railway Board letter dated October 3, the identified trains will receive special attention for housekeeping and onboard services while they remain in operation.

Long-distance trains can remain on the tracks for several days, creating additional challenges in maintaining hygiene. As passengers use coaches and toilets over extended periods, issues such as garbage accumulation, reduced toilet cleanliness and other minor maintenance concerns can become more difficult to manage.

The enhanced monitoring programme is intended to address these issues by ensuring that cleanliness standards are maintained during the entire journey.

Among the trains identified for the special monitoring are the Vivek Express, Avadh Assam Express and Jhelum Express. These trains undertake particularly long journeys, making continuous housekeeping and serviceability important for passengers travelling across multiple states and regions.

The focus of the initiative is not limited to cleaning coaches. It also covers areas such as toilets, garbage disposal and general onboard services. This is significant because passengers on journeys lasting more than 40 hours may spend multiple days inside the same train, making regular cleaning and maintenance essential.

Indian Railways has increasingly focused on improving onboard passenger services, particularly on long-distance routes where maintaining cleanliness can be more challenging. The latest decision specifically targets trains with extended journey durations and seeks to ensure that passengers do not experience a significant deterioration in cleanliness as the journey progresses.

A train may begin its journey in a clean condition, but maintaining that standard for more than 40 hours requires continuous attention. Passenger movement, food consumption and regular use of toilets can quickly increase the amount of waste generated inside coaches. Without regular intervention, garbage can accumulate and sanitation standards can decline.

The special monitoring mechanism is therefore intended to provide greater oversight during the journey itself. By paying closer attention to housekeeping and serviceability, railway authorities aim to address problems before they become major inconveniences for passengers.

The Railway Board's October 3 communication provides the basis for the enhanced monitoring of the identified trains. The move specifically covers services whose journey durations exceed 40 hours, making them a distinct category requiring additional attention.

The initiative is also expected to improve the reliability of basic passenger facilities. Cleaner toilets, better garbage management and regular housekeeping can make a considerable difference to passengers who spend two or more days travelling by train.

For passengers, the main objective is straightforward: cleanliness should be maintained throughout the journey, not just when the train begins its trip.

The identification of 11 trains for enhanced monitoring reflects the operational difficulties associated with maintaining hygiene on exceptionally long routes. Such trains pass through multiple railway zones and stations during their journeys, while serving passengers who may board and disembark at different points.

With special attention being given to these services, railway authorities are expected to monitor cleanliness and serviceability more closely during the extended journeys.

The programme includes some of India's well-known long-distance services, including the Vivek Express, Avadh Assam Express and Jhelum Express. Their inclusion highlights the importance of maintaining onboard facilities on trains that spend extended periods continuously in service.

The move is ultimately aimed at providing passengers with a better travel experience by strengthening housekeeping and cleanliness arrangements on long-distance trains.
