JD(U) Won't Oppose UCC If Provisions Are Okay: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior Janata Dal (United) leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary has said that the party will not oppose the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if its provisions are found to be acceptable.
His comments come amid renewed political debate over the implementation of the UCC after Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the legislation would be implemented across 22 NDA-ruled states by 2029.
JD(U) to Examine UCC Provisions
Chaudhary said the JD(U) has not yet seen the details of the proposed legislation and therefore there is no reason to take a hurried position.
He indicated that the party would first study the provisions of the UCC before deciding whether there are grounds for objection.
The Bihar Deputy Chief Minister said that if the provisions are not objectionable, the party would have no reason to oppose the legislation. If concerns arise, those issues would be communicated to the Union government.
JD(U) Will Consult NDA Partners
Chaudhary also stressed that the JD(U) is part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar.
He said the party would consult its coalition partners before arriving at a final decision on the Uniform Civil Code.
JD(U) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha is also expected to discuss the issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, according to Chaudhary.
Amit Shah's UCC Announcement
The latest political debate follows Amit Shah's assertion that the Uniform Civil Code would be implemented across 22 NDA-ruled states by 2029.
The announcement has intensified discussions among NDA allies, including the JD(U), about how the proposed law could affect different communities and states.
The UCC seeks to establish a common set of personal laws governing areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, replacing different religious personal laws with uniform provisions.
Difference Between JD(U) and RJD Positions
Chaudhary's comments also sought to distinguish the JD(U)'s position from that of Bihar's opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
The RJD has strongly opposed the implementation of the UCC in Bihar, arguing that it could adversely affect Muslims.
Chaudhary made it clear that the JD(U) would not simply follow the RJD's position and would make its decision independently after examining the legislation.
Shyam Rajak's Earlier Opposition
The issue has also exposed differing views within the JD(U).
Senior party leader and Phulwari Sharif MLA Shyam Rajak had recently spoken strongly against the UCC. Rajak said his position was consistent with an earlier stance attributed to party leader Nitish Kumar.
However, Chaudhary's latest remarks suggest that the party's final position will depend on the actual provisions of the proposed legislation and consultations within the NDA.
Nitish Kumar's Earlier Position
JD(U) has previously maintained a nuanced position on the Uniform Civil Code.
According to the report, Nitish Kumar had earlier indicated that the party could support the UCC Bill in Parliament while opposing its implementation in Bihar.
The latest statement from Chaudhary suggests that the party is keeping its options open until the details of the legislation are formally available.
UCC Debate Gains Political Momentum
The Uniform Civil Code remains a politically sensitive issue in India because personal laws are closely connected with religious and cultural practices.
Supporters argue that a common civil code would promote equality and uniformity in personal laws. Opponents have raised concerns about religious freedom, cultural diversity and the possible impact on minority communities.
The JD(U)'s eventual position could be politically significant because of its role within the NDA coalition.
What Happens Next?
For now, the JD(U) is expected to study the proposed UCC provisions and hold consultations with its coalition partners.
Chaudhary has indicated that the party will not oppose the legislation merely for political reasons but will raise specific concerns if any provisions are found objectionable.
The party's final position is therefore likely to become clearer after the UCC legislation is formally presented and discussions with the Union government take place.
