Thousands of Devotees Join Kanwar Yatra in Haridwar as Holy Month of Shravan Begins

Haridwar: The spiritual town of Haridwar witnessed a surge of devotees on Wednesday as the holy month of Shravan began, marking the start of the annual Kanwar Yatra, one of India's largest religious pilgrimages dedicated to Lord Shiva.

From the early hours of the morning, thousands of Kanwariyas arrived at the ghats of the Ganga to take a ritual bath before collecting holy water in decorated containers known as kanwars. The sacred water will be carried on foot to Shiva temples across several states, where it will be offered during prayers throughout the auspicious month.

The atmosphere in Haridwar was filled with devotional chants of "Har Har Mahadev" as pilgrims, many dressed in saffron attire, participated in religious rituals and prepared for their onward journey. Groups of devotees from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab and other parts of northern India were seen making their way through designated pilgrimage routes.

The Kanwar Yatra, observed annually during Shravan, holds deep religious significance in Hinduism. Devotees believe that offering Ganga water to Lord Shiva during this period brings spiritual merit and fulfils prayers for health, prosperity and well-being.

To ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage, authorities have implemented elaborate security measures across Haridwar. Thousands of police personnel, paramilitary forces and disaster response teams have been deployed at key locations, while CCTV cameras and drone surveillance are being used to monitor crowds.

Traffic diversions and special arrangements have also been put in place to facilitate the movement of pilgrims and minimise inconvenience to local residents. Medical camps, drinking water stations, temporary shelters and emergency response units have been established along major routes to assist devotees during the yatra.

Railways and state transport authorities have introduced additional services to accommodate the expected rise in passenger traffic during the pilgrimage season. Officials have appealed to devotees to follow safety guidelines and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a peaceful and orderly yatra.

Religious organisations and volunteers have also set up community kitchens (langars) and service camps to provide food, water and first aid to pilgrims undertaking the often strenuous journey on foot.

The Kanwar Yatra is expected to continue throughout the month of Shravan, with millions of devotees participating across northern India. Authorities remain on alert as pilgrim numbers are projected to increase significantly over the coming weeks.
