Maharashtra Government Faces Political Backlash
The Maharashtra government has faced criticism following controversial remarks by Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad about farmers who die by suicide. His comments have triggered widespread outrage, putting the ruling government and its allies in a difficult political position amid growing concerns over the state's agrarian crisis.
Gaikwad, who represents the Buldhana Assembly constituency and belongs to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, suggested that people should not attend the funerals of farmers who die by suicide. He argued that such a social boycott could discourage others from taking similar steps.
The remarks have been criticised as insensitive, particularly as numerous farming families continue to struggle with crop losses, financial difficulties and the effects of drought.
What Did Sanjay Gaikwad Say About Farmers?
Gaikwad made the controversial statements while speaking to the media in Buldhana. He argued that farmers facing difficulties should approach the government, their local MLAs or MPs for assistance rather than taking their own lives.
He also said that farmers who die by suicide leave their spouses and children to face serious hardships. However, his suggestion that their funerals should be boycotted, and that their bodies should be left exposed to animals, provoked strong reactions.
Critics said that such remarks fail to acknowledge the complex circumstances behind farmer suicides, including financial distress, crop failure and inadequate access to timely support. They also questioned whether public representatives should use such language when addressing a serious social and economic crisis.
Political Leaders Condemn the Remarks
The comments prompted criticism from political leaders and farmer representatives, who called for greater sensitivity from elected representatives.
BJP MLC Pravin Darekar condemned Gaikwad's remarks and urged Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to exercise control over leaders making such statements. Darekar said the government was working to address farmers' problems, including through loan-waiver measures, and argued that insensitive comments could deepen the suffering of distressed families.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam also stressed that politicians and public representatives must show empathy towards farmers, especially given the drought conditions affecting Maharashtra.
Farmer leaders Ajit Navale and Raju Shetti also criticised the MLA's statements and questioned the conduct of elected representatives during a period of significant agricultural distress.
Maharashtra's Growing Farmer Distress
The controversy comes amid continuing concerns about farmer suicides in Maharashtra. Drought conditions, insufficient rainfall, crop losses and mounting debts have placed considerable pressure on farming communities across several districts.
According to figures reported by Hindustan Times based on information obtained under the Right to Information Act, 13,128 farmers died by suicide in the state between January 2022 and June 2026. The report also highlighted delays and rejections involving compensation claims submitted by affected families.
These figures underline the importance of effective agricultural support, accessible financial assistance and timely intervention for farmers experiencing severe distress.
Demand for Greater Accountability and Sensitivity
Gaikwad's remarks have renewed debate over the responsibility of elected representatives when addressing sensitive public issues. Critics argue that farmer suicides require compassionate responses, practical assistance and policies that address the underlying causes of distress.
The controversy has also increased pressure on the ruling alliance to clarify its position and demonstrate its commitment to protecting farmers' interests.
As Maharashtra continues to confront agricultural challenges, the incident highlights the need for responsible political communication alongside meaningful measures to support vulnerable farming families.
