'Didn't Feel Any Vulgarity': Mandakini Defends Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili Waterfall Scene

Mumbai: Veteran actress Mandakini has opened up about one of the most talked-about scenes of her career — the waterfall sequence from Raj Kapoor's 1985 film Ram Teri Ganga Maili. Looking back at the shoot, the actress said she did not feel any vulgarity or discomfort while filming the sequence.

Mandakini, who made her Bollywood debut with the film, was only 16 years old when she began shooting for Ram Teri Ganga Maili. The film, directed by Raj Kapoor, went on to become one of the defining films of her career.

In a recent interview with ANI, Mandakini recalled shooting the song 'Tujhe Bulayen Yeh Meri Bahen', in which her character Ganga appears under a waterfall wearing a white saree. The sequence became highly discussed after the film's release and has remained a subject of debate over the years.

Mandakini says she did not find the scene vulgar

Speaking about the sequence, Mandakini said Raj Kapoor explained the scene to her before filming. According to the actress, the filmmaker's approach was gentle and reassuring, and she did not perceive the sequence as vulgar.

She said the larger theme of the film revolved around purity and the character of Ganga, adding that the intention behind the sequence was different from how some viewers later interpreted it.

Mandakini also recalled that she felt slightly uncomfortable at one point and decided to double the saree. She said Kapoor agreed with the adjustment, after which the scene was filmed.

She was only 16 when the film was shot

Mandakini's comments have also brought renewed attention to the circumstances in which the film was made. She was a teenager when she entered the film industry and had limited experience of filmmaking at the time.

The actress has previously spoken about her relationship with Raj Kapoor on the sets, describing herself as inexperienced and saying she generally followed his instructions while working on the film.

Ram Teri Ganga Maili was Kapoor's final directorial film and starred Mandakini opposite Rajiv Kapoor. The film's songs and Mandakini's portrayal of Ganga helped make her a prominent name in Hindi cinema.

What Mandakini said about the breastfeeding scene

Mandakini also addressed another controversial sequence from the film involving her character and a baby. She clarified that there was no actual breastfeeding, saying the scene was created through camera positioning and the way the baby was held.

She has made similar comments in earlier interviews, describing the scene as a portrayal of motherhood rather than the sexualised sequence some viewers perceived it to be.

Filmmakers wanted her to recreate the waterfall sequence

According to Mandakini, the success of Ram Teri Ganga Maili led some filmmakers to ask her to recreate the famous waterfall sequence in their own projects. She said she declined those requests.

The actress argued that the success of the Raj Kapoor film was not simply because of an individual scene, but because of its story, treatment and overall message.

The waterfall sequence continues to be remembered as one of the most recognisable moments in 1980s Hindi cinema, with interpretations of its artistic intent differing among audiences and critics.
