MEA Says Government ‘Doesn’t Endorse Anything’ Said by Ousted Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina During Media Interaction

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday clarified that the Government of India does not endorse any statements made by ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her recent interaction with the media.

Responding to questions during the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that any views expressed by Sheikh Hasina during her interaction with journalists were her own and should not be construed as reflecting the position of the Government of India.

"The Government of India doesn't endorse anything that she has said during the media interaction," the spokesperson said, reiterating India's official stance on the matter.

The clarification follows media attention surrounding remarks made by Sheikh Hasina after her arrival in India following the political developments in Bangladesh. Her comments had prompted questions regarding India's position and whether her statements reflected the views of the Indian government.

The MEA maintained that India's policy towards Bangladesh remains guided by its commitment to maintaining close bilateral ties and supporting peace, stability and democratic processes in the neighbouring country.

India has repeatedly stated that developments in Bangladesh are an internal matter for its people and has expressed hope for an early return to normalcy while continuing to engage with all stakeholders through established diplomatic channels.

Officials also reiterated that India's relationship with Bangladesh is based on shared history, mutual trust and cooperation across areas including trade, connectivity, security, energy and cultural exchanges.

The latest clarification underscores New Delhi's effort to clearly distinguish the personal remarks of political leaders from the official position of the Government of India, particularly on sensitive regional issues.
