Nepal Flash Floods: UP’s Maharajganj and Kushinagar on High Alert as Gandak River Swells

Lucknow: Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have issued a high alert in the border districts of Maharajganj and Kushinagar after devastating flash floods in Nepal caused a sharp rise in the water level of the Gandak River.
Officials fear that continuous heavy rainfall in Nepal’s hilly regions could lead to more floodwater flowing into rivers that enter Uttar Pradesh, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying villages along the Indo-Nepal border.
The alert comes after three bodies were recovered from the Gandak River, with officials suspecting that the victims were swept away by floodwaters originating in Nepal.
Floodwaters from Nepal reach Uttar Pradesh
Heavy rainfall across several parts of Nepal has triggered flash floods and landslides over the past few days.
As rivers originating in Nepal swell, large volumes of water flow downstream into northern India, affecting districts located near the international border.
The Gandak River, one of the major Himalayan rivers flowing from Nepal into Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, has witnessed a significant rise in water levels following the floods.
Officials are closely monitoring embankments and vulnerable riverbank areas.
High alert in Maharajganj and Kushinagar
District administrations in Maharajganj and Kushinagar have activated flood preparedness measures.
Teams from the irrigation department, disaster management authorities and local administration have been deployed to monitor river levels around the clock.
Officials have also warned residents living near riverbanks to remain alert and be prepared to move to safer locations if water levels continue to rise.
Boats, relief materials and emergency response teams have been kept on standby in vulnerable areas.
Three bodies recovered from Gandak River
Authorities confirmed that three bodies have been recovered from the Gandak River.
Preliminary information suggests that the victims may have been swept away during the flash floods in Nepal before their bodies were carried downstream into Uttar Pradesh.
Officials are working to establish the identities of the deceased and coordinating with Nepalese authorities regarding the incident.
Disaster response teams on standby
The Uttar Pradesh government has instructed district administrations to maintain constant surveillance over rivers flowing from Nepal.
Emergency teams have been positioned in flood-prone villages, while relief camps are being prepared if evacuation becomes necessary.
Officials have also appealed to people not to venture into swollen rivers or cross flooded areas.
Villages near the river under watch
Several villages situated along the Gandak River have been identified as sensitive locations.
Authorities are inspecting embankments for signs of erosion or leakage, as continuous pressure from rising water can weaken flood protection structures.
Local officials are also using public announcements to warn residents about possible changes in river conditions.
Why floods in Nepal affect Uttar Pradesh
Many rivers flowing through eastern Uttar Pradesh originate in Nepal’s Himalayan region.
When Nepal experiences intense rainfall, water quickly flows downstream into India, often causing sudden increases in river levels.
Districts along the Indo-Nepal border are therefore among the first areas affected during major flood events in Nepal.
Rainfall continues in Nepal
Weather conditions in Nepal continue to remain unstable, with forecasts indicating more rainfall in several regions.
This has raised concerns that additional floodwater could enter rivers flowing towards Uttar Pradesh over the coming days.
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh are maintaining close coordination with central agencies and monitoring updates from Nepal regarding rainfall and river discharge.
Advisory for residents
The district administration has issued several safety advisories for people living in flood-prone areas:
Avoid entering swollen rivers and streams.
Stay away from damaged embankments.
Follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Keep emergency essentials ready in case evacuation is announced.
Report rising water levels or erosion immediately to local officials.
Situation being monitored closely
The flood situation in Maharajganj and Kushinagar remains under constant observation.
While no large-scale flooding has been reported in the districts yet, officials say the alert will remain in place until water levels stabilise.
The administration has urged residents to remain calm but stay vigilant as floodwaters from Nepal continue moving downstream through the Gandak River system.
