The Northeast region of India is looking to attract more international tourists by simplifying permit procedures for foreign visitors. The issue was a major focus at the 14th International Tourism Mart, which concluded in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, on Friday, October 30, 2026.
Five of the eight northeastern states — Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland — are classified as protected areas for foreign nationals. As a result, visitors from abroad require special permissions to enter these regions.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) organised a specialised technical session during the tourism mart to discuss ways to make access to protected and restricted areas easier. Representatives from all eight northeastern states and other stakeholders took part in the discussions.
The discussions focused on reducing entry-related difficulties for international tourists without compromising safety and security requirements. Officials from the Tourism Ministry said that several reforms are already being implemented to simplify the permit application process.
Under the updated arrangements, foreign nationals can apply for permits online through Indian diplomatic missions before arriving in India. Applications can also be submitted through Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs).
For those seeking offline processing, applications can be submitted directly within the concerned host states or Union Territories. These measures are intended to make travel procedures more convenient and encourage greater international tourist participation in the Northeast.
