New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to visit the United States in September for a G20 trade meeting, with talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also expected during the visit.
The visit assumes significance as India and the United States continue discussions on trade-related issues and seek to strengthen economic engagement between the two countries.
Goyal has been closely involved in India's trade negotiations with Washington, particularly on matters concerning tariffs, market access and bilateral trade. His proposed visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to review the progress of ongoing discussions.
The G20 trade meeting will bring together representatives of major economies to discuss issues affecting global commerce, investment and economic cooperation. Trade ministers are expected to deliberate on challenges facing international trade and ways to promote resilient and sustainable economic growth.
India's participation comes at a time when global trade is facing considerable uncertainty due to changing tariff policies, supply-chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions.
A meeting between Goyal and Greer is likely to focus on India-US trade relations and areas where both countries can expand economic cooperation. The two sides have been working to address differences while exploring opportunities to increase bilateral trade.
For India, greater access to the US market remains an important trade objective, particularly for sectors with strong export potential. Washington, meanwhile, has sought greater market access for American goods and services in India.
The two countries have also been working towards strengthening supply-chain cooperation and encouraging investment in areas considered strategically important.
The proposed September visit could therefore provide momentum to negotiations and help both sides address outstanding trade concerns through continued diplomatic engagement.
India and the US have significantly expanded their economic relationship in recent years, with bilateral trade covering a wide range of goods and services. Technology, pharmaceuticals, engineering products, energy and digital services remain important components of the economic partnership.
Goyal's meeting with the US Trade Representative is expected to be closely watched by businesses and exporters on both sides, particularly those seeking greater clarity on tariffs and market access.
The visit also comes against a broader backdrop of India's efforts to diversify trade partnerships and strengthen its position in global supply chains.
Further details regarding Goyal's schedule and the agenda for his meetings are expected to emerge closer to the visit.
