‘Brought Two Nations Closer’: PM Modi's Big Praise for Biju Patnaik in Indonesia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed former Odisha Chief Minister and legendary freedom fighter Biju Patnaik for his pivotal role in forging enduring ties between India and Indonesia, saying the iconic leader "brought two nations closer."

Speaking during his official visit to Indonesia, Modi recalled Patnaik's extraordinary contribution to Indonesia's struggle for independence and noted that his courage and statesmanship laid the foundation for a relationship that has grown into a robust strategic partnership.

"Biju Patnaik was not just a great son of India but also a true friend of Indonesia. His remarkable efforts brought our two nations closer," the Prime Minister said.

Remembering a wartime hero

Biju Patnaik occupies a unique place in the shared history of India and Indonesia. As an accomplished pilot, he undertook a daring mission in 1947 to rescue Indonesian nationalist leaders during their country's fight against Dutch colonial rule.

His actions earned him immense respect in Indonesia, where he is remembered as a hero who stood by the country's independence movement during a critical period.

In recognition of his contribution, the Indonesian government conferred one of its highest civilian honours, the Bintang Jasa Utama, on Patnaik.

India-Indonesia ties deepen

Modi's remarks came as India and Indonesia elevated their bilateral cooperation through a series of agreements covering defence, maritime security, trade, digital technology and strategic collaboration.

The two countries also signed landmark defence agreements involving the supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles, reflecting growing trust between New Delhi and Jakarta.

Officials said the expanding partnership underscores the shared commitment of both countries to ensuring peace, stability and a free, open Indo-Pacific.

Odisha remembers its iconic leader

Modi's tribute has resonated strongly in Odisha, where Biju Patnaik remains one of the state's most influential political figures.

Known for his fearless leadership, aviation achievements and contributions to public life, Patnaik's legacy continues through institutions named after him and through the political influence of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), founded by his son, Naveen Patnaik.

The Prime Minister's remarks also highlighted how Patnaik's contributions extended well beyond Indian politics, shaping India's international relations in the years following Independence.

A relationship rooted in history

India and Indonesia have enjoyed close cultural and historical ties for centuries, strengthened further through diplomatic and strategic engagement in recent decades.

As both nations expand cooperation in defence, commerce and regional security, Modi said the friendship envisioned by leaders such as Biju Patnaik continues to guide bilateral relations.

His tribute served as a reminder that individual acts of courage and diplomacy can leave a lasting imprint on international partnerships, with Biju Patnaik's legacy remaining a symbol of the deep bond shared by India and Indonesia.
