Retail Inflation at 4.8 Per Cent Highest in 12 Years of Modi Government: Pralhad Joshi

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has said India's retail inflation, which rose to around 4.8 per cent in August 2026, is the highest level recorded during the 12 years of the Narendra Modi government. He attributed the rise partly to El Nino and other factors, while stressing that the government is taking steps to control inflation. Official data showed consumer price inflation increased to 4.82 per cent in August, driven largely by higher food prices.

Retail Inflation at 4.8 Per Cent Highest in 12 Years of Modi Government: Pralhad Joshi

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday said India's retail inflation has reached its highest level in the 12 years of the Narendra Modi government, after consumer price inflation increased to 4.82 per cent in August 2026.

Joshi, who holds the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution portfolio, said the government is closely monitoring food inflation and working to bring price pressures under control.

Retail Inflation Rises to 4.82 Per Cent

According to government data released on Monday, India's retail inflation rose to 4.82 per cent in August 2026. The increase was largely attributed to higher food prices.

The August inflation reading represents a significant increase from the comparatively lower inflation levels recorded earlier and has renewed attention on household expenses and food-price pressures.

Pralhad Joshi Calls Inflation a Serious Concern

Speaking to reporters in Hubballi, Karnataka, Pralhad Joshi said his ministry is particularly sensitive to the issue because it directly monitors food inflation.

Joshi said attempts to politicise the matter would not address the underlying issue and acknowledged that the current inflation rate was the highest during the Modi government's 12-year tenure.

El Nino and Other Factors Blamed

Joshi attributed the increase in inflation partly to El Nino and other factors.

Weather-related disruptions can affect agricultural production and food supplies, potentially putting upward pressure on prices of vegetables, cereals and other essential commodities.

The government is therefore keeping a close watch on food prices as it seeks to contain inflationary pressures.

Food Prices Remain a Key Driver

Food inflation remains one of the most important factors influencing India's overall retail inflation rate.

When prices of essential food items rise, households can experience increased spending on everyday necessities. This can particularly affect lower- and middle-income families, for whom food accounts for a relatively large share of household expenditure.

The latest inflation data therefore puts renewed focus on measures aimed at maintaining adequate supplies and preventing excessive price increases.

Impact on Consumers

Higher retail inflation can increase the cost of everyday goods and services. Consumers may face greater expenses for food, household products and other necessities when prices rise.

Persistent inflation can also influence household savings and spending decisions. If more income is directed towards essential purchases, families may have less money available for discretionary spending and investments.

Government Monitoring Food Inflation

The Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ministry plays an important role in monitoring prices of essential commodities.

Joshi said the government remains sensitive to the issue and is taking steps to control inflation. Maintaining adequate supplies and responding to sudden increases in food prices are among the key challenges for policymakers.

The government's response will be closely watched as inflation remains an important economic and political issue.

Inflation and India's Economic Outlook

Retail inflation is an important indicator for India's economy because it affects consumers, businesses and monetary policy.

A sustained rise in inflation can influence interest-rate decisions, borrowing costs and overall consumer demand. For policymakers, the challenge is to control price pressures without weakening economic growth.

The August inflation figure will therefore be an important factor in assessing India's near-term economic conditions.

What Happens Next?

The government is expected to continue monitoring food prices and supply conditions while assessing the factors behind the latest increase in retail inflation.

With Pralhad Joshi acknowledging the 4.8 per cent inflation rate as the highest during the Modi government's 12-year period, controlling food-price pressures is likely to remain a major policy priority in the months ahead.
