Sikkim landslides: 10 dead, several feared trapped inside Teesta hydel project tunnel

At least 10 people have lost their lives after a series of landslides triggered by incessant rainfall battered Sikkim, while several workers are feared trapped inside a Teesta hydel project tunnel, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

The landslides struck multiple locations across the Himalayan state, damaging roads, disrupting communication and affecting rescue efforts. Authorities said the death toll could rise as search teams continue to clear debris and reach inaccessible areas.

Rescue operation underway

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and district administration have been deployed to the affected areas.

Rescue personnel are focusing on the tunnel at the Teesta hydel project, where several workers are believed to be trapped after debris blocked the entrance. Heavy machinery has been pressed into service to remove rubble and create access for emergency responders.

Officials said the operation is being carried out under difficult conditions due to continuous rainfall and unstable terrain.

Heavy rain triggers widespread damage

Persistent rainfall over the past few days has triggered landslides and flash floods in several parts of Sikkim, disrupting normal life.

Road connectivity has been severely affected, with multiple highways blocked by mudslides and fallen boulders. Power supply and communication networks have also been disrupted in some regions, complicating relief operations.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rainfall in parts of the state.

Government monitoring the situation

The Sikkim government is closely monitoring the rescue efforts and coordinating with central agencies to provide relief to affected communities.

Senior officials have been directed to oversee evacuation, restoration of essential services and the distribution of emergency supplies in the worst-hit areas.

The administration has assured that all available resources are being mobilised to rescue those trapped and assist families affected by the disaster.

Death toll may rise

With search operations continuing and rescue teams yet to reach some affected locations, authorities have cautioned that the casualty count could increase.

The incident is the latest reminder of the vulnerability of Himalayan states to monsoon-induced landslides, which frequently disrupt infrastructure and pose significant risks to residents and workers involved in large infrastructure projects.
