A student at a south Kolkata school was allegedly attacked by a classmate with a sharp object on Wednesday following an argument over a book, police said.
According to school sources, the incident took place inside a classroom in the presence of a teacher. The injured student was initially taken to the school infirmary, where nurses provided first aid before senior teachers and staff members rushed the student to a private hospital.
The two students had reportedly argued over a book. Despite a teacher’s warning, one of the students allegedly took out a sharp object and attacked his classmate.
According to a statement issued by the school, the incident occurred at around 12:29 pm. The school said one student suddenly struck another student from the same class with a sharp object while the class teacher was present.
The injured student began bleeding and was immediately taken to the school infirmary. After receiving initial treatment, the student was taken to hospital by senior teachers and other staff members.
The school authorities said the injured student was undergoing treatment. Police later said the student was stable.
The student who allegedly carried out the attack was removed from the classroom and counselled by the school psychologist. The school said his father subsequently took him home.
The school authorities also filed a police report following the incident.
In its statement, the school said it was concerned about the physical and emotional well-being of everyone affected, including students who witnessed or were otherwise impacted by the incident. The school said it would take necessary steps to address the emotional and psychological impact.
Police said they received a complaint from the school and registered a case under the appropriate section of law.
The injured student’s father said he was informed about the incident by school authorities and immediately went to the hospital. According to him, his son suffered injuries to the neck and fingers and had to undergo surgery.
The incident has raised concerns about student safety and the need for immediate intervention when conflicts occur inside classrooms.
