Defend Iran War, Pitch Efforts to End Gaza Conflict: What Trump's UN Speech May Include

US President Donald Trump used his 2026 United Nations General Assembly address to defend the US war with Iran, arguing that the military campaign prevented Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He also highlighted US efforts to advance a peace plan for Gaza and criticised the United Nations over what his administration views as interference with US sovereignty.

Defend Iran War, Pitch Efforts to End Gaza Conflict: What Trump's UN Speech May Include

New York: US President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Iran war, the Gaza conflict and renewed diplomatic efforts across the Middle East.

Ahead of the speech, White House officials had indicated that Trump would defend his administration's military campaign against Iran and highlight efforts to advance a peace plan for Gaza. Reuters reported after the address that Trump argued the war had prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The speech came as Trump sought to present his foreign-policy record to world leaders while tensions continued across the Middle East.

Defence of the Iran war

One of the central themes was expected to be, and became in the speech, Trump's justification for the US military campaign against Iran.

According to Reuters, Trump argued that the operation prevented Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. The White House had similarly said before the speech that the president would discuss efforts to ensure Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.

The conflict has continued for months and has had wider regional and economic consequences. At the same time, diplomatic signals emerged around the UN gathering, with Iran indicating that it could consider reopening the Strait of Hormuz under conditions involving reduced US military pressure and the lifting of port blockades.

The developments suggest that military pressure and possible negotiations remain intertwined as Washington and Tehran assess their respective positions.

Gaza peace plan likely to remain a major focus

Trump also used the UN platform to highlight his administration's efforts to end the conflict in Gaza.

Before the speech, US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said Trump would provide an update on progress towards implementing a Gaza peace plan.

The administration has been seeking a framework involving an end to the conflict, Hamas disarmament and reconstruction of Gaza. However, negotiations have faced obstacles, and several issues remain unresolved.

Trump's emphasis on Gaza comes as the United States attempts to balance its support for Israel with diplomatic efforts involving Arab countries and other regional actors.

Trump takes aim at the United Nations

Another expected theme was Trump's criticism of the United Nations and international institutions.

A White House official said before the speech that Trump would discuss efforts to prevent the UN and other international organisations from infringing on US sovereignty. He was also expected to challenge what his administration describes as an ideological agenda within international institutions.

The approach reflects Trump's broader criticism of the UN and his administration's decision to reduce US involvement and funding in several international organisations.

Broader foreign-policy agenda

Trump's UN appearance also comes during a period of intensive diplomatic activity involving Ukraine, the Gulf states, Iran, Israel and Venezuela.

After his UN address, Trump was scheduled to meet several world leaders, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and leaders from Gulf countries concerned about regional security.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also in New York for the UN General Assembly, with Tehran signalling that diplomatic channels could potentially reopen despite continuing tensions.

Why the speech matters

Trump's UN address places two contrasting elements of his foreign-policy message side by side: a defence of military action against Iran and an emphasis on negotiations aimed at ending conflicts such as the Gaza war.

The administration is presenting the Iran campaign as a measure intended to prevent a nuclear threat while simultaneously pursuing diplomatic arrangements in Gaza and exploring possible avenues for talks with Tehran.

The response from other governments and the progress of the various diplomatic initiatives will determine how those positions develop in the weeks ahead.
