Why was TMC's Kalyan Banerjee suspended from Lok Sabha for the rest of the Monsoon Session?

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon Session, following allegations of disorderly conduct during parliamentary proceedings.

Why was Kalyan Banerjee suspended?

According to parliamentary proceedings, Banerjee was suspended after being accused of repeatedly disrupting the functioning of the House and defying the Chair's directions.

The government alleged that his conduct was unbecoming of a Member of Parliament and hindered the smooth functioning of the Lok Sabha.

Following a motion moved in the House, members approved his suspension for the remainder of the Monsoon Session.

Opposition protests continue

The suspension occurred against the backdrop of continuous protests by Opposition MPs demanding discussions on the alleged NEET paper leak, police action during the CJP protests and other issues.

Opposition lawmakers accused the government of refusing to allow debates on matters of public importance, while repeatedly staging demonstrations inside and outside Parliament.

Frequent slogan-shouting and adjournments have marked much of the current session.

TMC reacts

The Trinamool Congress criticised the suspension, alleging that the government was using disciplinary action to silence Opposition voices.

Party leaders maintained that their MPs were raising issues of national importance and accused the ruling party of avoiding accountability through suspensions.

The government, however, defended the action, saying parliamentary rules must be upheld to ensure orderly conduct of business.

What does the suspension mean?

With the suspension in effect, Kalyan Banerjee will not be able to attend Lok Sabha proceedings for the remainder of the Monsoon Session unless the House decides otherwise.
