Can't Convert Court into ‘Political Fora’: SC Disapproves DMK's Plea Seeking Judicial Restraint on Vijay

The Supreme Court on Tuesday firmly rejected an attempt to draw the judiciary into a political dispute, observing that courts cannot be converted into "political fora" while hearing a plea linked to actor-turned-politician Vijay.

The court's remarks came during proceedings on a petition filed by a DMK functionary seeking judicial restraint on Vijay over his political speeches and public statements. The bench made it clear that political disagreements are best addressed through democratic processes and not by invoking the jurisdiction of constitutional courts.

Supreme Court questions the plea

During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the maintainability of the petition, remarking that the judiciary should not become a platform for settling political scores.

The bench observed that if political leaders disagree with each other's speeches or statements, the appropriate response lies in political engagement and public discourse rather than judicial intervention.

The judges emphasized that courts are meant to adjudicate legal disputes and protect constitutional rights, not regulate political campaigns or electoral rhetoric.

Petition sought restraint on Vijay

The plea was filed against Vijay, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), over remarks made during his political engagements.

The petitioner sought directions from the court to restrain Vijay from making certain statements, arguing that his speeches could have wider political implications.

However, the Supreme Court indicated that such grievances do not ordinarily warrant judicial interference unless there is a clear violation of law or constitutional provisions.
