Which 9 US states are affected by Cyclospora outbreak? Full list as CDC issues fresh warning

The CDC, in collaboration with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health departments, has expanded its investigation into a multistate Cyclospora outbreak linked to recalled shredded and iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.

The outbreak, which was initially confined to five states, now includes nine states, following the addition of four more. According to federal officials, the illnesses are associated with exposure to recalled lettuce products, including some served at Taco Bell locations.

Full list of the 9 affected states

The CDC says confirmed outbreak-related cases have been reported in:

  • Illinois

  • Indiana

  • Kansas

  • Kentucky

  • Michigan

  • Ohio

  • Oklahoma

  • Pennsylvania

  • West Virginia

The newly added states are Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, expanding the investigation beyond the original five-state cluster.

What has the CDC said?

According to the CDC, the outbreak has been linked to recalled iceberg lettuce distributed by Taylor Farms de Mexico. Federal investigators are continuing traceback efforts to determine the full scope of the contamination.

As of the latest update:

  • 1,947 confirmed illnesses have been linked to this outbreak.

  • At least 98 people have been hospitalised.

  • No deaths have been reported.

Officials caution that case numbers may continue to rise because confirming infections can take several weeks.

What is Cyclospora?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that causes cyclospora infection (cyclosporiasis), an intestinal illness spread through contaminated food or water.

Common symptoms include:

  • Watery diarrhoea

  • Stomach cramps

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea

  • Fatigue

  • Weight loss

  • Bloating and gas

Symptoms typically appear about one week after exposure and may persist or recur if left untreated.

What should consumers do?

The FDA and CDC advise consumers to:

  • Avoid consuming recalled lettuce products listed in the recall.

  • Check recall notices before purchasing packaged salads or shredded lettuce.

  • Seek medical care if symptoms develop after eating potentially contaminated produce.

Taco Bell has stated that it stopped using the affected lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico on July 17, while the recall remains in effect.
