Maharashtra bans analogue paneer: Here's how to identify genuine dairy paneer
The Maharashtra government has prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of analogue paneer, a product made using vegetable fats instead of milk fat, in a move aimed at preventing consumer deception and ensuring food safety.
The decision comes amid concerns that many consumers unknowingly purchase analogue paneer believing it to be traditional dairy paneer.
What is analogue paneer?
Unlike conventional paneer, which is prepared by curdling fresh milk, analogue paneer is manufactured using vegetable oils or vegetable fats, milk solids, starches, emulsifiers and other permitted food ingredients.
While it may resemble dairy paneer in appearance and texture, it differs significantly in composition and nutritional value.
Food regulators require analogue paneer to be clearly labelled so that consumers know they are buying a non-dairy substitute.
Why has Maharashtra banned it?
According to state authorities, the ban aims to prevent misleading sales practices where analogue paneer is allegedly sold as genuine dairy paneer.
Officials said consumers deserve clear information about the products they purchase, especially when it comes to food items widely consumed in households, restaurants and street food outlets.
The move is also expected to strengthen enforcement against food adulteration and mislabelling.
How to tell real paneer from analogue paneer
Consumers can look for several signs to distinguish between the two:
Read the label: Genuine paneer lists milk as its primary ingredient, while analogue paneer mentions vegetable oil, vegetable fat or edible fat.
Texture: Dairy paneer is generally softer and crumbly, whereas analogue paneer tends to be rubbery or excessively firm.
Taste: Traditional paneer has a fresh, creamy milk flavour. Analogue paneer may have a neutral or oily taste.
Heating behaviour: Real paneer softens slightly when heated but retains its structure. Analogue paneer may become chewy or develop a rubber-like texture.
Packaging: Check whether the product is labelled as "Analogue Paneer" or "Paneer Analogue." Under food regulations, manufacturers are required to identify the product correctly.
Advice for consumers
Food safety experts recommend buying paneer from trusted brands or reputed dairy outlets and carefully checking ingredient lists before purchasing.
Restaurants, caterers and food businesses have also been advised to ensure compliance with the state's regulations and avoid misleading customers regarding the type of paneer used in food preparations.
Impact on the food industry
The ban is expected to affect manufacturers and commercial establishments that use analogue paneer because of its lower production cost.
Industry stakeholders are likely to seek further clarification from the government regarding implementation timelines and compliance requirements.
Meanwhile, consumer groups have welcomed the move, saying it will improve transparency and help buyers make informed choices.
