Heavy rains likely to lash 15 Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai and Coimbatore, from June 28

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for 15 districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and Coimbatore, warning that widespread showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely from June 28.

According to the IMD, favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to trigger moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the state over the weekend. The weather agency attributed the forecast to an upper-air cyclonic circulation and enhanced moisture inflow, which are likely to intensify rainfall activity across northern and western Tamil Nadu.

Apart from Chennai and Coimbatore, the districts likely to receive heavy rainfall include Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruppur and the Nilgiris.

The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated places. Residents have been advised to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying areas that are prone to waterlogging.

Chennai is expected to witness generally cloudy skies with intermittent spells of rain over the next few days. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain between 31°C and 34°C, while overnight temperatures could hover around 25°C to 27°C, providing some relief from the recent humid conditions.

The Nilgiris and adjoining ghat areas may experience particularly intense rainfall, raising concerns over the possibility of landslides and localized flooding. District administrations have been asked to remain prepared for any weather-related emergencies.

State disaster management authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged local bodies to ensure that stormwater drains are cleared to minimise urban flooding. Emergency response teams have also been placed on alert in vulnerable districts.

Fishermen have been advised to check the latest weather bulletins before venturing into the sea, as squally weather conditions are expected along parts of the Tamil Nadu coast during the forecast period.

The IMD has advised the public to avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms, limit unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and follow updates issued by local authorities. Motorists have also been urged to drive cautiously on waterlogged roads and maintain safe distances due to reduced visibility.

With the southwest monsoon gradually becoming more active over southern India, rainfall activity is expected to continue in several parts of Tamil Nadu over the coming days. The IMD said it will issue updated forecasts and warnings as weather conditions evolve.
