A fresh controversy has erupted after BJP leader and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi alleged that peacocks are killed for their feathers, remarks that have prompted strong objections from several Jain organisations.

The row centres on the use of peacock feather brooms, commonly known as mor pankh pichhi, by members of the Jain community, particularly monks. Gandhi questioned the source of the feathers, claiming that peacocks are often killed to obtain them and calling for greater scrutiny of the practice. In response, multiple Jain organisations strongly rejected the allegations, asserting that the feathers used in pichhis are naturally shed by peacocks during their annual moulting season. The controversy has also reignited a broader debate over the sourcing and trade of peacock feathers in India. Under Indian law, the Indian peafowl is protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. While the collection and possession of naturally shed feathers have traditionally been permitted under certain conditions, hunting or killing peacocks is prohibited and attracts legal penalties.

Animal welfare activists have long expressed concerns about the illegal wildlife trade and have called for stricter monitoring to ensure that feathers sold in markets originate from naturally shed plumage rather than unlawful hunting.

Jain organisations, however, have insisted that their religious practices strictly adhere to non-violence and that monks use only feathers collected after they fall naturally. They contend that linking the community to the killing of peacocks without evidence damages its long-standing commitment to compassion towards all living beings.

The latest controversy has generated considerable discussion on social media, with opinions divided between those supporting stronger oversight of the peacock feather trade and those defending traditional Jain practices.
