MLC Election Results 2026: State-Wise Winners and Latest Updates
The Legislative Council election results of 2026 have put the BJP, Congress, Samajwadi Party, JD(U), RJD, Jan Suraaj Party and other candidates in focus across four states.
Elections were held for 28 Legislative Council seats across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Voting took place on October 23, with counting beginning on October 27.
The results have brought major gains for the BJP-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka, victories for the BJP and SP in Uttar Pradesh, and significant upsets in Bihar. In Maharashtra, counting remained underway in the latest available reports.
These elections were conducted in graduates' and teachers' constituencies, whose electorates differ from those in regular Assembly elections.
1. Uttar Pradesh MLC Election Results 2026
Uttar Pradesh held elections for 11 Legislative Council seats, comprising five graduates' constituencies and six teachers' constituencies.
The BJP secured four seats and the Samajwadi Party won two among the results confirmed in the latest reports. Counting and disputes over certain constituencies meant that the complete final list was not yet available.

The BJP retained important constituencies, including Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers' and Lucknow Teachers'. Hari Singh Dhillon defeated SP candidate Danish Akhtar in Bareilly-Moradabad by 17,676 votes, while Umesh Dwivedi defeated Sushil Kumar in Lucknow by 6,992 votes.
The SP also registered victories in Varanasi Teachers' and Agra-Aligarh Teachers'. Lal Bihari Yadav won the Varanasi Teachers' seat, while Akash Agrawal defeated BJP nominee Hari Kishore Tiwari in Agra-Aligarh Teachers'.
UP Counting Trends and Disputes
Counting continued in several other constituencies, including Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates', Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers' and other seats.
SP candidate Mansingh Yadav was leading in Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates' after the fifth round, with 27,157 votes against BJP candidate Ashok Rathore's 7,648.
A dispute also arose during counting in Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers'. BJP candidate Dhruv Kumar Tripathi received 11,881 votes against independent candidate Rajiv Yadav's 11,415 after the final round, while the SP alleged irregularities and boycotted the counting process.
Reports also said an additional commissioner was removed after a complaint concerning 52 extra votes found in a ballot box from Mau compared with the official data.
The final outcome of the remaining constituencies was still awaited in the reports available on October 28.
2. Bihar MLC Election Results 2026
Bihar held elections for eight Legislative Council seats—four graduates' constituencies and four teachers' constituencies.
The teachers' constituency results produced several upsets, including a major defeat for the BJP in Patna Teachers'. The BJP, RJD, Jan Suraaj Party and an independent candidate each won one of the four teachers' seats.

RJD Ends BJP Veteran's Long Hold in Patna
RJD candidate Dr Sanjeev Kumar defeated BJP veteran MLC Nawal Kishore Yadav in the Patna Teachers' constituency, ending Yadav's long hold on the seat.
The result was a significant setback for the BJP, which had retained the constituency for around three decades.
Jan Suraaj Wins Its First Bihar Legislative Council Seat
Jan Suraaj Party candidate Dr Suresh Prasad Rai defeated sitting Congress MLC Madan Mohan Jha by 324 votes in Darbhanga Teachers'.
The victory marked the party's first win in the Bihar Legislative Council.
Independent candidate Rahul Raj won the Saran Teachers' seat, defeating sitting MLC Afaq Ahmed. BJP candidate Narendra Prasad Singh won the Tirhut Teachers' constituency by defeating independent candidate Bhushan Kumar Jha.
Bihar Graduates' Seats: Counting Continues
Counting continued in the graduates' constituencies, including Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Kosi.
JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar was leading RJD candidate Dilip Rai in Patna Graduates' in the latest report, although the official result was still awaited at that stage.
Therefore, the four teachers' constituency winners listed above should not be mistaken for the complete final list of all eight Bihar MLC seats.
3. Karnataka MLC Election Results 2026
Karnataka delivered the clearest result among the four states, with the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance winning all four Legislative Council seats.
The BJP won three seats, while its alliance partner JD(S) secured one. The ruling Congress failed to win any of the four constituencies.

JD(S) candidate A. P. Ranganath defeated sitting Congress MLC Puttanna by 908 votes in the Bengaluru Teachers' constituency.
Ranganath secured 10,810 votes against Puttanna's 9,902.
BJP Retains Three Seats
BJP candidate Shashil G. Namoshi retained the North-East Teachers' seat, defeating Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur by 3,297 votes.
In the South-East Graduates' constituency, K. M. Suresh defeated Congress candidate Shashi Hulikunte Mutt by 23,098 votes.
S. V. Sankanur retained the West Graduates' seat, defeating Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai by 9,323 votes.
Major Setback for Congress
The result was a setback for Karnataka's ruling Congress, which lost its sitting Bengaluru Teachers' seat and failed to win the other three constituencies.
However, the outcome does not automatically indicate a change in the state government's position. These MLC constituencies have a different electorate from regular Assembly constituencies, and the results do not directly determine the stability of the Congress government.
4. Maharashtra MLC Election Results 2026
Maharashtra held elections for five Legislative Council seats, covering three graduates' constituencies and two teachers' constituencies.
The contest involved the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
In the latest reports published on October 28, counting was still underway, and the final winners had not been officially confirmed for all five seats.

In the Nagpur Division Graduates' constituency, BJP candidate Sudhakar Kohale was leading sitting Congress MLC Abhijit Wanjari by 4,294 votes after the second round.
Kohale had secured 60,924 votes against Wanjari's 56,630, while independent candidate Nitesh Karale had received 24,249 votes.
However, no candidate had reached the winning quota of 75,438 votes at that stage. The outcome depended on further counting and the transfer of preferential votes.
In Amravati Teachers', Shiv Sena candidate Kiran Sarnaik was also reported to be leading.
The final result across the five Maharashtra constituencies remained pending in the latest available update.

Important: This table reflects the latest reported position at the time of publication, not a final tally across all 28 seats. Counting was still underway in several constituencies.
Why Are the MLC Election Results Important?
The elections are politically significant because they measure support among teachers and graduates, two electorates that can be influential in state-level political debates.
The BJP's strong performance in Karnataka and its victories in Uttar Pradesh provide a boost to the party and its allies. The SP's wins in Uttar Pradesh indicate that it remains competitive in selected constituencies.
In Bihar, the RJD's victory in Patna Teachers' and Jan Suraaj's first Legislative Council win were among the notable developments.
For Congress, the failure to win any seat among the results declared at that stage was a setback, particularly in Karnataka, where the party is in power.
However, MLC elections should not be treated as a direct forecast of Assembly election results. The voter base, voting process and political dynamics differ from those of regular Assembly elections.
Key Takeaways
Elections were held for 28 MLC seats across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Bottom Line
The 2026 MLC elections produced a strong performance for the BJP-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka, important victories for the BJP and SP in Uttar Pradesh, and significant upsets in Bihar. Maharashtra's outcome remained uncertain while counting continued.
The most important result was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's clean sweep in Karnataka, while the RJD's victory in Patna Teachers' and Jan Suraaj's first Bihar Legislative Council win also drew attention.
Because counting was still underway in several constituencies on October 28, readers should distinguish confirmed winners from reported leads when referring to the full MLC results.
