Monsoon Finally Reaches Mumbai After Long Delay; IMD Warns of Heavy Rain Over Next 48 Hours

Mumbai: The wait is finally over for Mumbaikars. After missing its normal onset date by nearly two weeks, the southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Mumbai, bringing much-needed relief from persistent heat and humidity that had gripped the city throughout June.

Heavy showers lashed several parts of Mumbai on Monday night and Tuesday morning, with rain also reported from neighbouring regions including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad and Palghar. The arrival of the monsoon marks the end of an unusually prolonged dry spell that had raised concerns over water shortages and delayed seasonal relief.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued rainfall activity over the next 24 to 48 hours and issued alerts for Mumbai and surrounding districts. Weather officials have indicated that conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the monsoon across western and central India.

Why Was the Monsoon Delayed?

Mumbai's normal monsoon onset date is June 11. However, this year the monsoon's progress stalled for nearly two weeks after advancing into parts of Maharashtra earlier in June. Meteorologists attributed the delay to unfavourable atmospheric conditions and interruptions in the monsoon flow, which slowed its northward movement.

The prolonged delay resulted in hot and humid conditions across the city, with temperatures remaining above normal levels. It also intensified pressure on Mumbai's water resources, leading to concerns among residents and civic authorities.

IMD Issues Rain Alert

According to the IMD, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across Mumbai over the coming days. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated on weather forecasts, particularly those living in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.

Heavy rain has already been reported in parts of Mumbai and neighbouring districts, prompting concerns about traffic congestion, localized flooding and disruptions to daily life. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms and gusty winds accompanying some rain spells.

Relief and Challenges

For many residents, the arrival of the monsoon has brought welcome relief after weeks of sweltering weather. The rains are also expected to improve reservoir levels and ease concerns over water supply across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

However, civic agencies remain on alert as intense rainfall often leads to waterlogging, traffic disruptions and delays in suburban train services during the early phase of the monsoon season.

With the southwest monsoon finally making its long-awaited entry into Mumbai, attention now turns to the intensity of rainfall expected over the next few days.
