Delhi Police has not yet registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the young woman who was seen allegedly using abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, according to reports. The incident, captured in a viral video, sparked widespread political debate and demands for legal action on social media.

The development comes after a Zero FIR was registered by Noida Police following a complaint filed by a Supreme Court advocate. Since the alleged incident took place in the national capital, the case has been transferred to the Delhi Police, which is now examining the matter and deciding on the next course of action.

What is the case?

The controversy erupted after a video from the Jantar Mantar protest showed the woman making allegedly abusive remarks against the Prime Minister. The clip quickly went viral across social media platforms, prompting calls from several quarters for police action.

The complainant alleged that the remarks were insulting and sought legal action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Acting on the complaint, Noida Police registered a Zero FIR and forwarded it to the Delhi Police, as the alleged offence occurred within Delhi's jurisdiction.

No Delhi FIR so far

Despite receiving the transferred complaint, Delhi Police has reportedly not registered a fresh FIR in the matter as of now. Officials are understood to be examining the legal aspects of the complaint before deciding whether a regular FIR should be lodged.

The incident has also triggered a broader discussion on the legal limits of free speech, abusive language directed at public officials, and the threshold for criminal prosecution under Indian law. Legal experts note that courts have previously distinguished between offensive language and punishable offences such as defamation or public mischief, depending on the facts of each case.

Woman issues public apology

Amid the controversy, the woman at the centre of the case released a video apologising for her remarks. Folding her hands, she expressed regret and apologised to the nation, saying she was remorseful over the incident. Reports also said she attributed her conduct to external influence and personal circumstances.

The matter remains under scrutiny, and it is now up to the Delhi Police to determine whether the transferred complaint warrants the registration of a formal FIR after examining the available evidence and applicable legal provisions.
