Tourists seen hanging out of moving car in Kasol, viral video sparks outrage
A viral video from Kasol in Himachal Pradesh shows a group of tourists hanging out of a moving car, triggering widespread public outrage on social media on Saturday. The incident, reportedly captured earlier this week, has raised serious concerns over reckless behaviour on narrow hill roads and tourist safety regulations. Authorities are expected to review the footage and take action against those involved.

A disturbing video from the tourist hotspot of Kasol in Himachal Pradesh has triggered sharp criticism online after showing a group of young travellers hanging out of a moving car on a winding mountain road. The clip, which surfaced on social media earlier this week, has since gone viral, drawing attention from local authorities and prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety rules in hill stations.
In the video, several passengers can be seen partially outside the windows of a hatchback-style vehicle while it continues to move along a narrow stretch of road in the Parvati Valley region. No visible safety measures were in place, and the vehicle appeared to be navigating a sharp curve when the passengers leaned out, apparently filming or posing for videos.
The footage has not been independently verified, but its circulation across multiple platforms has already sparked outrage among residents, travel enthusiasts, and road safety advocates.
Rising concern over reckless tourism behaviour
Kasol, located in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, is known for its scenic landscapes, riverside cafes, and backpacker culture. Over the past decade, it has become a major attraction for domestic and international tourists. However, with rising footfall, authorities have repeatedly flagged incidents of irresponsible behaviour on narrow mountain roads.
A senior local police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that such stunts are becoming increasingly common during peak tourist season.
“We are seeing repeated cases where tourists ignore basic safety rules for social media videos. This is extremely dangerous, not just for them but for others on the road,” the officer said.
Officials indicated that if the vehicle registration details are identified, legal action could be initiated under provisions of reckless driving and endangering public safety.
Social media backlash intensifies
The video has triggered a wave of criticism online, with users condemning what they described as “Instagram-driven recklessness.” Many pointed out that hill roads in Himachal Pradesh are especially risky due to sharp turns, limited visibility, and frequent landslides.
One user wrote that “no viral video is worth a life,” while another called for stricter penalties on tourists who violate traffic norms in sensitive zones.
Travel influencers and bloggers have also weighed in, warning that such behaviour damages the reputation of responsible travellers and puts pressure on local infrastructure already strained by seasonal tourism.
Safety experts warn of growing trend
Road safety experts have highlighted a worrying pattern of tourists engaging in risky behaviour for online content. According to transport safety analysts, distractions like leaning out of moving vehicles significantly increase the risk of fatal accidents, especially on hilly terrain.
A road safety consultant based in Chandigarh noted:
“In hill regions, even a minor distraction can lead to loss of control. When passengers lean out of moving vehicles, the risk multiplies. These are preventable accidents.”
Experts have urged state authorities to increase roadside surveillance and conduct awareness campaigns targeted at young travellers.
Himachal tourism under pressure
The incident adds to a growing list of concerns regarding unregulated tourist behaviour in Himachal Pradesh’s popular destinations such as Kasol, Manali, and Spiti Valley. Local communities have previously raised issues related to traffic congestion, littering, and violation of local safety norms.
The Himachal Pradesh tourism department has in recent years tried to promote “responsible tourism,” but enforcement remains a challenge in remote areas where monitoring is limited.
Officials are now expected to revisit enforcement mechanisms, including stricter fines and increased police patrolling during peak travel months.
What happens next
Authorities are currently reviewing the viral footage to identify the vehicle and individuals involved. If confirmed, penalties could include fines, suspension of driving privileges, and additional legal action depending on the severity of the violation.
Meanwhile, the incident has reignited the debate over social media influence on travel behaviour, especially among younger tourists who often prioritise viral content over safety.
As Kasol continues to attract large crowds this season, officials are likely to intensify checks on dangerous driving practices and issue fresh advisories urging tourists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
For now, the viral video stands as another reminder of how quickly a moment of recklessness on a mountain road can turn into a nationwide discussion on safety and responsibility.
