Doctors write to President Murmu over Wangchuk's hospitalisation, action against CJP protesters at Jantar Mantar

A group of doctors has written to President Droupadi Murmu, expressing concern over the hospitalisation of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and the police action against protesters during the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.

In the letter, the doctors urged the President to intervene, citing concerns over Wangchuk's health following his removal from the protest site and the treatment of demonstrators during the recent agitation in the national capital.

Doctors express concern

The signatories raised concerns about Wangchuk's medical condition after he was shifted to hospital amid his prolonged hunger strike.

They called for transparent medical care and emphasised that any treatment should respect established ethical and legal principles, while also urging that his health be monitored independently.

The doctors also voiced concern over reports of injuries sustained by some protesters during the demonstrations.

Letter seeks President's intervention

The letter appealed to President Murmu to ensure that constitutional rights are protected and that peaceful protesters are treated in accordance with the law.

It also sought a review of the police action at Jantar Mantar, where clashes broke out during the 'Chalo Sansad' protest organised in support of Wangchuk and other demands.

The doctors argued that democratic dissent should be addressed through dialogue and restraint.

Protest continues to spark debate

The CJP-led protests have triggered widespread political and legal debate, with Opposition parties accusing the government of suppressing peaceful demonstrations.

The Centre has defended the actions of Delhi Police, maintaining that security personnel acted to preserve law and order and prevent protesters from entering restricted areas.

The developments have also been raised in Parliament and before the courts, making the issue one of the major political flashpoints of the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Focus shifts to dialogue

The letter comes as the Centre has initiated efforts to engage with Wangchuk following days of protests and mounting political pressure.

With discussions between the government and the activist expected, attention is now focused on whether dialogue can help resolve the standoff while addressing concerns over the handling of the protests and Wangchuk's health.
