Lok Sabha Speaker Expunges BJP MP Jagdambika Pal's Remarks Made While Presiding Over House

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has ordered the expunction of certain remarks made by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal while he was presiding over the proceedings of the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

According to parliamentary proceedings, the decision was taken after the remarks drew objections from Opposition members, who argued that they should not form part of the official record of the House.

Jagdambika Pal, who was chairing the proceedings in the absence of the Speaker, made the remarks during a heated exchange between treasury and Opposition benches. The comments prompted protests from Opposition MPs, who sought their immediate removal from the records.

Subsequently, Speaker Om Birla exercised his authority under the Rules of Procedure to order that the disputed remarks be expunged from the official proceedings of the Lok Sabha.

In parliamentary practice, the Speaker has the power to direct that words or remarks considered defamatory, unparliamentary, indecent or otherwise inappropriate be removed from the official records. Once expunged, such remarks are not treated as part of the authorised proceedings of the House.

The incident occurred amid repeated disruptions and sharp exchanges during the Monsoon Session, where the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition have clashed over several political and legislative issues.

Opposition members have been pressing for discussions on various matters, while the government has urged lawmakers to allow Parliament to function smoothly and take up legislative business.

The expunction of the remarks highlights the Speaker's role in maintaining decorum and ensuring that parliamentary proceedings adhere to established rules and conventions.

Further details regarding the specific remarks that were removed from the records have not been officially disclosed.
