Rights Forum Report Calls for Restoration of Jammu and Kashmir Statehood

New Delhi: A rights forum has urged the Central government to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the move would strengthen democratic governance, improve administrative accountability and address concerns related to political representation in the Union Territory.

The recommendation was made in a report released by the forum, which examined the political, administrative and human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir following its reorganisation in August 2019.

According to the report, restoring statehood would help revive democratic institutions, enhance local governance and ensure greater public participation in decision-making. The forum also called for the timely conduct of democratic processes and increased engagement with elected representatives.

The report further recommended measures to safeguard civil liberties, strengthen institutional transparency and promote inclusive development across the region. It argued that these steps would contribute to long-term peace, stability and public confidence.

The rights body also highlighted the importance of balancing national security considerations with constitutional rights and democratic values. It urged policymakers to adopt a consultative approach while framing policies affecting the Union Territory.

The Centre has previously stated that the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood remains a commitment and would be considered at an appropriate time. The government has maintained that security, development and the strengthening of democratic institutions remain its priorities in the region.

The issue of statehood continues to be a significant political and constitutional matter, with several political parties and civil society organisations advocating for its early restoration.

The latest report is expected to add to the ongoing public and political debate over the future administrative framework of Jammu and Kashmir.
