Manipur CM Announces NIA Probe Into Abducted Nagas Case
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand on Saturday said the state government will hand over the case involving the alleged abduction of members of the Naga community to the National Investigation Agency for a detailed investigation.
The announcement comes amid rising concern and tension in parts of Manipur following reports linked to the incident. The Chief Minister said the state administration is taking the matter seriously and wants a transparent and professional investigation into the case.
Appeal for Peace Amid Sensitive Situation
Along with announcing the NIA probe, Khemchand appealed to citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony. He urged people not to spread rumors or inflammatory content on social media that could worsen the already sensitive atmosphere in the state.
The Chief Minister stated that the government is committed to ensuring justice while also protecting public order and stability.
He emphasized that cooperation between communities is essential to maintain peace in Manipur, which has witnessed prolonged ethnic and social tensions in recent years.
Security Forces Intensify Operations
Following the incident, security forces reportedly intensified search and monitoring operations in affected areas. Officials said police and central security agencies are coordinating to gather evidence and trace those involved in the alleged abduction.
Additional deployment of security personnel has also been carried out in vulnerable locations to prevent any escalation of unrest.
Authorities have appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies during the ongoing investigation.
NIA Takeover Seen as Major Step
The decision to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency is being viewed as a significant move by the Manipur government. The NIA generally investigates cases involving national security, insurgency-related activities, organized violence, and major criminal conspiracies.
Political observers believe transferring the probe to a central agency could help ensure wider coordination and increase public confidence in the investigation process.
The agency is expected to examine all possible angles connected to the incident once the formal transfer process is completed.
Opposition and Civil Groups React
The development has triggered reactions from political parties, tribal organizations, and civil society groups across Manipur.
Several organizations welcomed the decision for an independent probe, while others demanded swift action to safely trace the abducted individuals and punish those responsible.
Community leaders have also appealed for restraint and dialogue to avoid further tensions between different groups in the state.
Continuing Challenges in Manipur
Manipur has remained sensitive due to ethnic tensions, security concerns, and clashes involving different communities over the past year. Incidents related to violence, displacement, and law-and-order challenges have repeatedly drawn national attention.
Security experts say restoring long-term peace in the state will require both administrative action and sustained community-level reconciliation efforts.
The investigation into the abducted Nagas case is expected to remain closely monitored as authorities work to stabilize the situation and prevent further unrest.
