Siddaramaiah May Quit Today, DK Shivakumar Tipped as Karnataka CM

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to resign on Thursday afternoon amid intense speculation over a leadership transition within the Congress government. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is widely seen as the frontrunner to take over, following high-level meetings with the Congress leadership in Delhi and Bengaluru.

Bengaluru Braces for Major Political Shift

A dramatic power transition appears to be unfolding in Karnataka, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah likely to step down later today, potentially paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to assume the top post.

Speculation intensified Thursday morning after Siddaramaiah hosted a closed-door breakfast meeting at his official residence “Kaveri” in Bengaluru. Senior cabinet ministers, Congress legislators, and Shivakumar attended the gathering. Visuals from the meeting showed the two leaders hugging and interacting warmly, a scene many interpreted as a sign that the long-running leadership tussle may finally be reaching a conclusion.

Several Congress MLAs later told reporters that Siddaramaiah could submit his resignation to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot after 3 pm.

Congress MLA Ashok K Pattan claimed there was a “100 per cent possibility” of Shivakumar becoming the next chief minister if the resignation goes through.

What Triggered the Leadership Change?

The Congress government in Karnataka has witnessed persistent speculation over a rotational chief minister arrangement ever since the party returned to power in the 2023 Assembly elections.

At the time, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were the two strongest contenders for the CM’s post. The Congress high command eventually picked Siddaramaiah, but reports of a power-sharing understanding never fully disappeared.

For months, Shivakumar supporters have argued that the deputy CM was promised the top job midway through the government’s term. Though Congress officially denied any imminent change earlier this week, political activity in Bengaluru and Delhi suggested otherwise.

Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, reportedly held multiple rounds of discussions with both camps in recent days. According to party insiders quoted by several national outlets, the leadership transition received informal approval after marathon meetings in Delhi earlier this week.

Congress Trying to Avoid Open Rift

The Congress leadership appears keen to present the transition as smooth and consensual rather than a bitter internal battle.

Political observers say Thursday’s breakfast meeting was carefully choreographed to display unity. Shivakumar was seen greeting Siddaramaiah respectfully and standing beside him during interactions with ministers and party workers. Celebrations had already begun outside Shivakumar’s residence by late morning.

A senior Karnataka minister, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the party wants “continuity without instability.”

“There is no rebellion. The leadership wants both leaders together because Karnataka is the Congress’s strongest southern state,” the minister said.

Another formula under discussion reportedly includes appointing multiple deputy chief ministers to balance caste and regional equations once Shivakumar takes charge.

Why Karnataka Matters Nationally

The political developments are significant beyond Karnataka.

The state remains one of the few large states currently governed by the Congress party. Any instability in Bengaluru directly affects the party’s national image ahead of future Lok Sabha and state elections.

Karnataka is also India’s leading technology and startup hub. Investors, industry bodies, and corporate groups closely monitor political stability in the state because decisions taken in Bengaluru affect IT exports, infrastructure investments, and urban development policies nationwide.

A leadership transition now raises questions about whether policy continuity will remain intact.

Shivakumar is known for his organisational skills and strong political management. Siddaramaiah, meanwhile, built his image around welfare governance and social justice politics. Analysts believe the transition could shift the government’s priorities toward infrastructure, real estate reforms, and party organisation ahead of elections.

Opposition Reacts Sharply

The opposition BJP wasted little time attacking the Congress over the apparent leadership drama.

Several BJP leaders accused the ruling party of focusing more on power struggles than governance. Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra reportedly mocked the Congress leadership for “changing gatekeepers instead of governance.”

Social media reactions were equally intense. On Reddit and X, many users debated whether Siddaramaiah’s exit would strengthen or weaken the Congress government. Some praised Siddaramaiah’s welfare-focused leadership, while others argued Shivakumar deserved an opportunity after years of organisational work for the party.

Political analyst Sugata Srinivasaraju recently observed that the prolonged uncertainty had already hurt governance.

“Despite a full majority, they have operated like a coalition government,” he said while discussing the internal Congress power struggle in Karnataka.

What Happens Next

As of Thursday afternoon, Siddaramaiah had not officially submitted his resignation. However, multiple reports indicate that a meeting with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot may take place later in the day.

If the resignation is accepted, the Congress Legislature Party is expected to meet quickly to formally elect Shivakumar as its leader. A swearing-in ceremony could follow within days.

The transition would mark one of the biggest political developments in southern India this year and potentially reshape the Congress party’s strategy heading into future elections.

For now, all eyes remain fixed on Bengaluru and the crucial hours ahead.
