In a major decision aimed at easing the financial burden on the agricultural sector, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday announced a complete waiver of cooperative bank crop loans foging immediate relief to thousands of small farming famr marginal farmers across the state. The waiver will cover loans up to Rs 50,000, brinilies struggling with mounting debt and rising cultivation costs.
The government also announced a separate relief package for large farmers. Under the scheme, eligible large-scale farmers will receive Rs 5,000 as financial assistance to help them manage agricultural expenses and crop-related losses.
The announcement comes shortly after Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, formed the government in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections. The crop loan waiver had earlier featured prominently in the party’s election manifesto and campaign speeches, where the actor-turned-politician promised extensive support measures for farmers and rural households.
According to government officials, the scheme is expected to benefit lakhs of farmers who had borrowed through cooperative banking institutions for agricultural activities. Rising input costs, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and fluctuating market prices had increased financial pressure on farmers in several districts of the state over the past few years.
The Chief Minister said the decision was taken to ensure that farmers are not pushed deeper into debt and can continue agricultural activities without financial stress. Officials indicated that detailed implementation guidelines and eligibility criteria would be released soon.
Farmer associations and agricultural groups across Tamil Nadu largely welcomed the move, describing it as a much-needed intervention for the rural economy. However, some farmer organisations have demanded that the government extend the full waiver benefit uniformly to all categories of farmers regardless of landholding size.
Political observers believe the announcement strengthens Vijay’s image as a leader focusing heavily on welfare-driven governance and rural outreach. During the election campaign, the Chief Minister had also promised improved minimum support prices, electricity benefits, and broader agricultural reforms aimed at boosting farmer income in the state.
The crop loan waiver is expected to have a significant financial implication for the state exchequer, though the government has maintained that farmer welfare remains a top priority. Economists say such measures often provide immediate relief but also require long-term agricultural reforms, including irrigation improvements, market stability, and better crop insurance coverage.
The latest announcement has sparked widespread discussion across political and farming circles, with many viewing it as the first major agricultural policy move of the new administration.
