Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar Condemns Congress' 'Gungi Gudiya' Remark Against Sunetra Pawar, Seeks Apology

Mumbai: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar has condemned the Congress over its "gungi gudiya" remark aimed at NCP MP Sunetra Pawar, describing the comment as inappropriate and disrespectful towards women in public life.

Reacting to the controversy, Narwekar said political disagreements should not cross the boundaries of civility and dignity. He urged the Congress to withdraw the remark and issue an unconditional apology to Sunetra Pawar.

The controversy erupted after Congress leaders allegedly used the phrase "gungi gudiya" while referring to Sunetra Pawar during a political exchange. The comment triggered strong reactions from leaders of the ruling alliance, who accused the Congress of resorting to personal attacks instead of engaging in constructive political debate.

Narwekar said such language has no place in democratic politics and stressed that elected representatives, irrespective of party affiliation, deserve respect. He added that public discourse should remain focused on policies and governance rather than personal remarks.

Leaders from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also criticised the Congress over the comment, calling it offensive and unacceptable. They demanded that the Opposition clarify its position and apologise for the statement.

The Congress has defended its criticism as part of political discourse, although the party's remarks have continued to draw criticism from leaders of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

The episode has added another layer to the ongoing political rivalry in Maharashtra, where the ruling alliance and the Opposition have frequently exchanged allegations over governance, leadership and political conduct.

Political observers say the controversy is likely to intensify debates over the tone of political campaigns and the language used by parties in public discourse ahead of future electoral contests.
