Sonam Wangchuk extends support to Jharkhand students, appeals to hunger-striking leader

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has expressed solidarity with students protesting in Jharkhand while urging a student leader on an indefinite hunger strike to call off the fast, saying the movement has already succeeded in drawing nationwide attention to its demands.

In a message addressed to the protesters, Wangchuk praised the students for raising their concerns through peaceful and democratic means. However, he appealed to the hunger-striking leader not to endanger personal health, arguing that sustained public engagement would be more effective in advancing the movement.

"Your message has reached people across the country. Please end the hunger strike and continue the movement through peaceful democratic means," Wangchuk said.

Appeal for dialogue

Wangchuk emphasised that protests rooted in non-violence and constructive dialogue are more likely to achieve lasting results. He urged the authorities to engage with the students and address their concerns through meaningful discussions.

The activist said that while peaceful protests are an important democratic right, preserving the health and well-being of those leading such movements is equally important.

Students' agitation continues

The Jharkhand students' protest has gathered momentum in recent days, with demonstrators demanding action on issues related to education and student welfare. The indefinite hunger strike by one of the protest leaders has become the focal point of the agitation, drawing support from student groups and civil society organisations.

Wangchuk's endorsement has further amplified the protest, bringing national attention to the students' demands.

Call for peaceful resolution

The activist reiterated that constructive engagement between the government and students remains the best path forward. He urged all stakeholders to resolve the issue through dialogue and avoid any escalation that could put lives at risk.

The protest continues as students await an official response from the authorities regarding their demands.
